Ingredients in Make Up That Cause Perioral Dermatitis

I rarely used to look at the ingredient list on makeup. Why bother, I couldn’t understand half of what it said anyway. But that all changed when I developed perioral dermatitis.

The list of makeup ingredients that can aggravate perioral dermatitis is LONG. I’ll list the most common irritants here but in my post on how sodium lauryl sulfates can irritate and trigger perioral dermatitis, I give free resources and tools to check any makeup product for potential skin irritants.

Unfortunately, this stubborn skin condition isn’t the only one triggered by makeup.  Atopic dermatitis (eczema), irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, urticaria (hives), or seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff and facial redness/flaking) can all be caused by irritating ingredients in makeup. So to keep your skin healthy and clear you’ll want to avoid these ingredients that are bad for perioral dermatitis.

Makeup Ingredients you should avoid with perioral dermatitis.

  • Sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate – sls
  • Petrolatum or mineral oil (a synthetic moisturizer)
  • Paraffin (wax)
  • Isopropyl myristate (synthetic oil)
  • Avobenzone and Octinoxate (chemical sunscreens)
  • Hydroquinone (antioxidant and bleaching agent)
  • Octoxynol and Cocamidopropyl Betaine (emulsifiers)
  • Nickel
  • Salicylic and Lactic Acid (antiseptics)
  • Bismuth Oxychloride
  • Fragrances
  • Dyes
  • Preservatives like formaldehyde, denatured, and benzyl alcohol

All of these irritate the skin and can aggravate perioral dermatitis.

But hold on, there’s an easier way to find the best makeup for perioral dermatitis. And that’s by choosing products with a short recognizable ingredient list.

Best Makeup for Perioral Dermatitis

Simple and pure are your best bet for wearing safe make up for perioral dermatitis.

Makeup for dermatitis skin should be similar to a natural skincare line. Full of ingredients that are nourishing and won’t pollute your body.

WARNING: Some natural brands can trigger perioral dermatitis. Natural doesn’t mean safe for perioral dermatitis. Furthermore, one cosmetics can be perfectly safe while others from the same brand can contain irritating ingredients for sensitive skin. Be sure to read the ingredient list.

When choosing makeup it’s super important to ignore the marketing and go straight to the ingredient list even on natural brands. So skip the “product detail”, “benefits”, and “key ingredients” sections of a product.

Just like with food labels, everything you need to know about safe makeup for dermatitis skin is in the list of ingredients. It doesn’t tell half-truths.

Most safe makeup for perioral dermatitis is also cruelty-free, good for the environment, and many times uses organic, vegan ingredients. Their colors come from fruit and plant pigments so they’re high in skin beneficial vitamins and antioxidants making them anti-aging too.

While the purest cosmetics may cost a little more than what you pick up at the drugstore, you can be sure their formulas are free of toxins, synthetic chemicals, and artificial fragrances.

Below are the best makeup brands products that are safe to put on perioral dermatitis so you don’t aggravate it. They use calming ingredients for sensitive skin.

Before make-up, don’t forget the sunscreen. Here are the best sunscreens for perioral dermatitis.

Doesn’t stick to dry patches of skin either. It goes on smoothly and spreads out silky and lightweight. Perfect for letting your skin glow through while covering imperfections.

Bareminerals for Perioral Dermatitis

Unfortunately, Bare Minerals isn’t a good makeup foundation for perioral dermatitis because it contains: Bismuth Oxychloride and Lauroyl Lysine. These are both common ingredients in mineral-based makeup that irritate sensitive skin and trigger perioral dermatitis. Even though you may not be allergic to these ingredients, it’s better to avoid all irritants when you have perioral dermatitis.

Best Powder for Perioral Dermatitis

100% PURE Bamboo Blur Powder, Translucent, Setting Powder – 0.2 Oz

Natural Bamboo Charcoal Oil Absorbing Tissues – 100 Counts, Easy Take Out Design – 100 Sheets

These miracle sheets are perfect for absorbing oil and setting makeup without removing it. Natural and so satisfying to use. I always carry these with me for oil blotting touch-ups during the day. But they can also be used in place of setting powder.

Setting Spray

Heritage Store Rosewater – No Dyes or Alcohol, Vegan & Cruelty Free – 8oz

If you like the smell of roses, this is a must-have. It’s inexpensive and can be used to set your makeup, perfume your hair, refresh and hydrate your skin throughout the day or moisten skin before applying serums. It has a lovely light fragrance. If you don’t care for a rose fragrance, a teaspoon of glycerin in a spray bottle of distilled water makes a wonderful setting spray too.

Safe lipsticks and balms for perioral dermatitis

What you put on your lips can easily irritate the skin around your mouth and trigger perioral dermatitis. Besides, once you start wearing healing emollient lip balm, I don’t think you’ll want to go back. They’re not “addictive” like chapstick and feel oh so good.

Lip balm

USDA Organic Lip Balm by Sky Organics – 4 Pack Strawberry Lip Balms

Here are high-quality lip balms at a reasonable price. Lots of flavors to choose from but with perioral dermatitis, make sure to avoid irritating essential oils like mint and eucalyptus.

Give your lips a subtle natural tint while deeply moisturizing them. Vanilla Hibiscus has the prettiest sheer pink color with an alluring scent of vanilla. While it will need to be applied during the day, it doesn’t wear off as quickly as most balms and glosses. Perfect for fair skin.

Pacifica Beauty Color Quench Natural Lip Tint, Sugared Fig, 0.15 Ounce

Sugared Fig has all the benefits of the above Vanilla Hibiscus but in a deeper tint for dark and light skin tones alike. It gives lips a natural touch of color with a subtle shine. I love all of Pacifica’s lip tints, but Sugared fig and Vanilla Hibiscus are my favorites.

10 pretty shades in this vitamin rich lip color serum but my favorite is Bliss shown above. The color payout is perfect, not too intense or too light. It’s made with clean natural ingredients that are more like skincare than a cosmetic. It has a smooth glossy feel, not sticky at all and looks amazing!

Best Eye Makeup for Perioral Dermatitis

Unfortunately, that lovely rash can travel up to your eyes. So you’ll want to choose gentle products for your eyelids too.

Switching to natural eye makeup was the last makeup change I made. All-natural eye makeup products make me feel good about what I put on and around my sensitive eye area. Plus, it was easy to make the switch once my eyeshadow and mascara ran out.

Need a little more definition? That’s where an all-natural eyeliner and eyebrow pencil come in handy.

Eyebrow pencil or eyeliner

100% PURE Long Last Eyeliner, Blackest – 0.14 oz

The perfect black liner for definition or a smokey eye. Gentle and safe with rich color that glides on smoothly. Other color choices are brown and white. And like the liner below can also double as a brow liner and has more staying power when set with a shadow or translucent powder.

Jane Iredale Eye Pencil Mineral-Based – .26 oz

This eyeliner in 7 different shades can double as a brow pencil when using neutral shades. It glides on smoothly and can be set with a similar color shadow for extra staying power.

Eyebrow pomade

100% PURE Long Lasting Brow Pomade for Fuller Brows, Healthier Hair Growth w/Biotin and Pro-Vitamin B5 – 0.17 oz

Did you know you can regrow and thicken eyebrows and eyelashes? Yep, there are lots of chemical-based growth serums that use vitamins to stimulate hair follicles. Skip the chemicals and go for this all-natural brow pomade instead. Not only does it give you defined, controlled brows, but it naturally helps them grow thicker too.

If you’re more of a minimalist, a few safe shadows can work for contouring the eye, lining it, and even filling in your eyebrows. To use as an eyeliner, just wet a thin eyeliner brush, dab into a dark shadow, and apply like a pencil or liquid eyeliner.

ONLY BETTER 16 Shades Vegan, High Pigmented Eye shadow Palette Fusion

Here’s an amazing price for a toxin free eye shadow palette with a gorgeous variety of metallic, shimmer, and nude shades. If you wear eye shadow this is a must have and the price is amazing!

Though I don’t worry too much about mascara, I’ve included a couple of natural mascaras because it’s nice to know the makeup so close to the eye is non-toxic.

Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara, Plumps and Lengthens, Black – .63 oz

Natural mascaras can be tricky to find. Even “all-natural” brands often come with many chemicals. Not so with Dr. Hauschka’s and Honest Beauty’s below. These natural ingredients give visibly thicker-looking lashes. The formula has a thin consistency so it goes on smoothly without clumping.

Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer, Dermatologist & Ophthalmologist Tested – 0.2 oz

A 2-in-1 mascara and primer together gives length, volume, and definition. Because this mascara thickens and lengthens lashes, it can go on a bit thick with additional coats. For a natural look use only one coat and for multiple coats use an eyelash comb to easily separate lashes.

How to Cover Perioral Dermatitis with Makeup

When you use natural cosmetics with safe ingredients, you can wear make up with perioral dermatitis.

And because perioral dermatitis isn’t contagious, you don’t have to worry about “contaminating” your makeup. Once your skin heals you can keep using the same products you used during your flare-up.

So when you want to put makeup on dermatitis follow these steps:

  • Start with clean moisturized skin.
  • Apply a safe for perioral dermatitis sunscreen (raw skin is vulnerable to the sun) this can also be your foundation step.
  • Next, smooth foundation over your skin to even out redness and apply blush, bronzer, and/or highlighter.
  • Wait to apply concealer after the above steps so coverage isn’t disturbed. Concealer can be applied with fingertips but if you use a small lip brush, it gives you more control and won’t go where you don’t need it.
  • Lastly, gently tap a loaded powder brush before setting makeup. Especially make sure to tap your brush before applying powder to concealed areas so the concealer doesn’t “grab” too much powder.

Will makeup suffocate my skin?

Best Makeup Perioral Dermatitis
PIN for Later!

It can aggravate it but no, it doesn’t suffocate it. Has anyone ever told you not to wear make-up with perioral dermatitis because your skin needs to breathe?

Your skin doesn’t breathe topically. It receives oxygen through your bloodstream.

On the other hand, pores can get clogged as a result of trapped dirt and dead skin cells. The best way to unclog pores and remove makeup from sensitive skin is to gently cleanse it and then, steam it. Steaming can be done with a warm washcloth, in the shower, or over a steaming bowl of water. Please use caution, steam from boiling water or extremely hot water can burn your skin.

Next up, I’ll tell you exactly how to easily and inexpensively remove makeup in the evenings.

How to safely and gently remove makeup

Every night, I use warm coconut oil to safely remove makeup. First, warm the coconut oil in your hands, then gently massage into makeup. This will “melt” your makeup away. Next, either over a bowl of warm water or while you take a shower, let the steam soften your skin and then gently remove the coconut oil with a warm washcloth. Be extra gentle around perioral dermatitis, it’s an inflammation response and not clogged pores.

What gets rid of perioral dermatitis?

I know most dermatologists and some online self-proclaimed experts suggest any makeup worsens or can seriously aggravate perioral dermatitis. But here’s the thing, the inflammation response that causes perioral dermatitis isn’t triggered by everything. When you use clean, non-irritating, non-toxic makeup ingredients, they soothe your irritated skin.

Perioral dermatitis is triggered by irritating chemicals (toxic and natural) found in our beauty routine, cleaning products, and even food. But that’s not all, gut issues caused by stress, food intolerance, and hormonal imbalance causes inflammation that can trigger this rash too.

Clean skincare and makeup are steps towards healing the body. The best makeup for perioral dermatitis nourishes the skin and doesn’t pollute the body. It safely covers imperfections, while at the same time, improves the quality of your skin.

  1. Thank you SO much for sharing your story. I’ve recently been diagnosed with PD. Though it’s only taken up residency around and under my nose, it’s already caused much stress, confusion and heart ache. I’ve read through several women’s blog posts on PD. Your’s has been the most thorough and has given me so much hope.
I am in the planning process right now. I want to be successful with all of this. Working on a “yes” foods list and tentative meal plan. I have purchased all SLS free soaps & detergents. I have scaled down my make-up routine and bought a new moisturizer.
** I have sensitivities to coconut so some of this planning is a little bit more tricky. I am trying to find a face cleanser that will not cause further damage to my skin. Would you be able to suggest some recommendations on facial cleansers? Face care?

    1. You’re welcome! Thank you for the compliment and for reaching out. I will have an article on skincare for Perioral Dermatitis soon. Plus, a homemade recipe for my nighttime healing face cream. Your skin type will dictate which facial cleanser works best but I’ve found many baby-formulated products and skincare made by companies who use pure, simple, recognizable ingredients are best for PD.

That being said, for a facial cleanser, I use the oil method to remove grim and make-up at the end of the day. Because I don’t have a sensitivity to coconut oil, I often use it to “cleanse” and then remove it all with a warm washcloth. But sweet almond or apricot kernel oil are lighter oils and work just as well. After removing the oil, I use a cotton pad and 100% witch hazel to remove any leftover residue before moisturizing.
